Healthful Essence is Essential!

Healthful Essence is a spiritual creation to share nourishing and healthy Caribbean food with the world. Vegan food has now adopted some classics such as Jerk Chicken! Let’s get into it:

  • Healthful Essence is all about taking care of you. They live and breathe the vegan lifestyle, and they have a surplus of items to bring positivity to your life. From sea moss drinks to banana nut bread to curried vegetables. They ensure everything is plant base then add their flavor to it! From their cooked menu, you will find items like macaroni and un-cheese, Jamaican patties, jerk un-chicken. It’s the options for me!!!
  • I ordered a jerk plate with rice & peas along with cabbage. I’ll start with the cabbage. It was fresh, and they were seasoned perfectly. It was like they were made with a dash of spicy too. Even without bacon fat, this cabbage was still slapping! The rice and peas felt and tasted like the classic dish it is. It did need one more seasoning in that pan though to win my tastebuds fully over. The Jerk un-chicken was one of the best vegan meat substitutes I have had. If you have a jerk sauce that is fire, then I will love you and tell everyone to show love.

Dat Fire Jerk Chicken!

Dat Fire Jerk Chicken is bringing Atlanta authentic Jamaican food with a healthier agenda. With a name like Dat Fire Jerk Chicken, I can’t help but be interested to try it. Let’s get into it:

  • Dat Fire Jerk Chicken prides itself on providing healthier Jamaican food but keeping those distinctive flavors alive. Just by looking at their menu, I notice their unique menu off rip. Besides that fire jerk chicken, you will find curry tofu, jerk chicken hoagie, and the infamous oxtails. You could smell the spices and sauces brewing as soon as you step in the door. It was like mature and bold just like your grandmother’s perfume cabinet. You know Jamaicans will give you a bang for your buck and stuff your plate, so I was pleased with how affordable this was. I came in with a $20 and almost left with 3 plates LOL.
  • Well how the jerk? Was it fire?? It sure was! It caught me by surprise, because I have seen multiple types of jerk sauces. However, their sauce is light and tangy almost. It wouldn’t be jerk without the spice! Every bite left you craving a little more sauce. It wasn’t but spiciest jerk I have had, but it definitely felt like the healthiest. The rice and peas were plentiful as they were the perfect combo for the jerk chicken. The chicken was falling off the bone and grilled exquisitely. The greens were off the charts also! They did not have that heavy sodium feel to them which played into their healthy vision. I should have put the jerk sauce on everything bruh! Moral of the story: The flavor satisfied every Jamaican craving I wanted, but it also was a healthier alternative. With that being said, it is time to dance off this food..

Jam Doung is Jammin’

Jam Doung Style is known for preparing and serving their traditional Jamaican dishes in a bright, casual space. I didn’t have to be bright or smart to know that this food would be delicious. Let’s get into it:

  • Jam Doung is bright and located at the corner of their street. It is the definition of a carry out spot. You walk in, place your order, and wait for your number to be called. Jam Doung does not have an extensive menu. I like to call it short and sweet, because you know the few items are about me made exquisitely. You wiill find your favorites such as jerry & curry chicken, oxtails, and rice & peas. I’m a big fan of jerk, but I’ve heard that if a place can make curry chicken tastes good then you are eating at the right place. I had to throw my detective glasses on and see what they were talking about.
  • I dove right into my plate of curry chicken, rice & peas, mac & cheese, and cabbage. I took about three bites before realizing that half of it was gone. I was thoroughly enjoying myself. The curry chicken was falling off of the bone and marinated with some much damn flavor. The way I was trying to get every bite, you would have thought i never had Jamaican food in my life. the rice and peas was seasoned and hearty. I love how they make a simple dish tastes so good. The mac & cheese was on point as expected. It was cheesy and had that nice layer of crust with it. Lastly, the cabbage was better than one you can make. It was fresh and dense with few other vegetables too. Best believe that the next time I’m in DC, I am stepping here with my gang like.. (& Black Women Lives Matter too)
